Godswill Agbaitoro

Godswill Agbaitoro is a distinguished legal scholar specializing in Energy Justice, Environmental Law, and Sustainable Development, with a particular focus on the Global South. His research examines how energy justice principles can be leveraged to address energy access and poverty challenges, ensuring equitable and sustainable energy transitions.

His PhD research at the University of Essex, funded by the institution, explored the role of energy justice as a strategic tool for advancing fair and inclusive energy policies. In 2019, he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Houston Law Center (UHLC), Texas, USA, further deepening his expertise in global energy governance.

Beyond academia, Godswill has provided expert consultancy and advisory services to government institutions in Kazakhstan and Nigeria, offering insights on energy policy, regulatory frameworks, and sustainable development. His work includes training and capacity-building initiatives, equipping policymakers and institutions with the tools to implement effective and just energy policies.

With a background in legal practice, he qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor in Nigeria in 2011 and previously served as a Research Assistant to the Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice, Edo State, Nigeria, contributing to policy reform and legal strategy.

As a recognized thought leader, Godswill actively engages in academic publishing and peer review. He has reviewed for leading journals, including the Journal of African Law (Cambridge University Press) and the Commonwealth Law Bulletin (Routledge), and served as a special issue guest editor for the Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law (Routledge).

His academic credentials include an LLM in Oil and Gas Law (2014) from the University of Aberdeen, UK, and an LLB (2010) from Madonna University, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy.

Godswill is an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the International Law Association (Nigerian Branch), and the Society of Legal Scholars. His work bridges academic research, policy advisory, and legal practice, making him a key contributor to advancing energy justice and environmental governance on a global scale.
